[Class 120 (iii)] A spool or bobbin comprises a barrel 7 with a disc like head 9, an annular plate 14 applied to the outer face of said head, said plate having an inner portion resting flat upon said head and a surrounding peripheral portion 14a raised from the head in an over-extending parallel relation thereto so as to form with said head an annular groove 15 extended beyond and coaxial with the barrel and means 14b formed in said plate providing a friction catch to engage a strand of yarn or thread wound in the said groove. Thus, the tail end of a winding may be held in a convenient position for securing to the lead end of the next bobbin to obtain a continuous feeding of yarn. The barrel 7 is preferably of wood with a bore or partial bore 8 for lightening and engagement with a pin or gudgeon. The heads 9 are preferably of hard vulcanized fibre, but may be of steel or of artificial mouldable material. A plug 10 with an enlarged head 10a fits through a centre opening in the head into a cavity 11 in the barrel 7. The head portion 10a may be surrounded with a metal ring 13 with a flange 13a, ribs 13c, and teeth 13d to help keep the plug in position. The plate 14 may be formed as an extension of an upper flange 13b on this ring 13. A washer 16 may be placed under the plate 14. A slot 17 in the head 9 leads radially towards the catch 14b. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the plate member 14 is a separate member applied to the bobbin head and has a central raised portion 14c. This raised portion provides for a twister head attachment similar to that described in Specification 465,388. A slot 20 with a central bore enlargement is formed in the raised portion for fitting the driving lug of a twister spindle, portions of the plate surface opened to form this slot being turned inwards to provide sides for the slot. In Fig. 6, the catch 14b is not used, the end of the yarn 18 being held on the barrel and a loop therein is passed through slot 17, twisted and wrapped around the groove 14 until most of the slack is taken up, the ends of the loop then being drawn back through the slot 17 until the windings in groove 15 are tight. A few turns round the barrel over the end of yarn 18 then prevent slippage.
