Abstract
465,071. Silencing and cooling exhaust gases. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and MAYER, F. Dec. 4, 1935, No. 33632. [Class 7 (ii)] A device for silencing and cooling exhaust gases, comprising a grid-like outlet having an outwardly-extending flange on each side of each opening in the grid to provide thin laminar spaces into which the exhaust gases are admitted and similar spaces between them for cooling-air, is set flush with and constitutes part of a cowl or like structure surrounding an aircraft engine. The gases are admitted to a D-shaped pipe 10, Fig. 2, and escape by narrow passages between U- shaped channels 13, which lie fore-and-aft of the aircraft and are welded to transverse webs on a frame 11 fitted to the pipe 10, the end members consisting of angle plates. Distortion of the channels &c. is prevented by spot welding adjacent walls at 16, the welds being in rows. Fig 5 shows a radialcylinder engine surrounded by a cowl 19 having an exhaust-collecting ring 18 at its leading edge, part of the cowl being cut away at 20 to accommodate the silencer. Fig. 6 (not shown), illustrates an in-line engine arranged in a nacelle or other aircraft structure in which the silencer is accommodated. Specification 343,662 is referred to.
