Abstract

464,796. Charging batteries. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 25, 1935, No. 29496. Convention date, March 21. [Class 38 (iv)] In two-rate battery charging systems in which a change over is effected by the energization or de-energization of a relay, the change in the energization is effected by a second relay controlled by a predetermined change in the battery voltage, the new rate being maintained until an opposite predetermined change in the battery voltage takes place. In the system shown in the Figure, the battery B is charged from the main leads O, X through a transformer T, the high or low charging rate depending upon whether the terminal 4 or 3 is rendered operative by the armature 5 of the relay W. The energization of the relay W is effected by the armature 9 of the relay VR, which responds to battery voltage, engaging contact 6. When, owing to voltage drop, armature 9 leaves contact 6 relay W is still energized by a retaining circuit closed by the second armature 7 of relay W until the battery voltage drops sufficiently for armature 9 to engage contact 8 when relay W is short circuited. Coloured lamps G, R, indicated the rate of charge and a bell A rings when the rate is changed. In a modification, the circuit of relay W is opened by a second relay instead of by short-circuiting.
