[Class 112] Electrically driven sewing-machines are provided with a casing on the cabinet for housing the usual foot-controller unit and are provided with a knee-shift lever with toggle mechanism for operating the controller unit by the knee. The sheet-metal support 10 for the controller unit is screwed to the end-wall 8 of the cabinet and has its sides 11 bent up and flanged at 12 to provide guides for the unit 14. A spring tongue 27 holds the unit 14 firmly in position. The controller unit 14 has a spring plunger 15 by depression of which the contact for starting the motor 9 is made and by which the usual carbon discs of the rheostat are compressed or released to regulate the speed of the motor. For foot operation, the unit 14 is detached from the casing 10 by a downward pull and placed on the floor so that the plunger 15 may be operated by the foot. For knee operation, the unit is housed in the casing 10 and the plunger 15 operated by means of the kneeshift lever 45. This is laterally adjustable by a pin-and-slot arrangement 41 to suit the operator. On moving the lever by the knee, the part 35 pivots about the stud 33 and thrusts a curved member 40 pivoted to it at 38 through a slot 31 in the bracket 32 to depress the plunger 15 with which it is in alignment.
