[Class 141] A pleating-machine for obtaining flat and upright pleats, comprises two knives 11, 12, which produce the pleats by co-operating with two cylinders 25, 26, located between the knife carriers 5, 6, and on either side of the planes of the knives 11, 12. The knives may each have imparted thereto a horizontal and a vertical movement, the former being effected by means of two levers 1, 2, operated by cams 7, 8 on a main shaft 9 and pivotally connected at their other ends to the knife carriers 5, 6, by links 3, 4, and slide pieces 10 ; the vertical movement is effected by two cam-operated levers 13, 14, and links 40, 41 secured to the knife carriers control the pivotal movement of the knives. The upper cylinder 25 is mounted in a frame 30 which has a horizontal movement imparted thereto by a cam-operated lever 21, Fig. 2, having a forked end 24 which engages with a stud 33 mounted on the frame 30, vertical movement of the cylinder 25 in the frame 30 being effected by a lever 20, Fig. 2, pivoted to a cam-operated lever 19. Flat pleats may be formed by causing the knives 11, 12 to execute horizontal and vertical movements so that they cross upon one another, and by causing the upper cylinder 25 to move either horizontally or vertically. Upright pleats may be formed by causing the knives to execute only horizontal movements, the pleats being formed by gathering due to the descent of the upper cylinder 25 upon the material to be treated. The cylinder 25 is provided with a sector 39 which is removed when it is desired to form upright pleats. The knife carriers 5, 6 may be connected together so as to move the knives in a direction parallel to the axes of the cylinders 25, 26.
