Abstract

464,088. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1936, No. 29560. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1935. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] In conjunction with a transformer tap-changing switch adapted to operate under load, protective means are provided for the impedance utilized for carrying the load current during the tap-changing operation, a normally-open switch being provided for short-circuiting the impedance, this switch being biassed to its closed position while current-responsive means hold the switch open unless the current through the impedance exceeds a given value for a given time. As shown in the Figure the impedance employed in conjunction with the transformer tap-changing switch 2 may be an ordinary resistance or inductance or as shown may consist of a block 1 of ceramic resistance material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Thyrite " having a negative resistance characteristic. This impedance is connected in series with a tension fuse 10 holding a switch. blade 8 away from a contact 7 against the action of a spring 9. Normally the fuse 10 can carry the line current during the period of time required for an ordinary tapchanging operation but if for any reason the switch 2 stops in an " off " position, i.e. midway between two contacts, the current flowing through the impedance and fuse melts the latter, allowing the switch 8 to close and shortcircuit the impedance. The closing action of the blade 8 rapidly increases the distance between the severed ends of the fuse, so preventing sustained arcing between these points. To protect the impedance from injury and overheating by relatively low currents of long duration which would not affect the fuse 10, a mass of fusible material 18 surrounds the insulated resistance-securing bolt 12 and in such an eventuality melts, falling down and spreading out so as to interconnect the terminal plates 13 at opposite sides of the resistance block 1.
