Abstract

463,651. Making pipe fittings. WENDEL, F. B., ALBERT, H., and STAUBER, A. Oct. 3, 1935, No. 27371. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1934. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Stamping.-Seamless pipe fittings or other shapings of copper &c. are made by inserting a cup 14 in the bore of a split die block 18, filling the shell with an elastic material, e.g. rubber or liquid, e.g. water or oil or sand &c. and pressing the top edge of the blank downward by the shoulder 36 of a die plunger 34, which also maintains pressure on the liquid &c. filler to prevent buckling, to cause the metal to spread into the cross bore 22. The plunger has a spring loaded valve 42 to allow excess liquid to escape and prevent the water from having any pressure other than the spring loading of the valve 42 which however is high enough to prevent buckling or wrinkling of the shell. The cross bore 22 may have stop plugs 28 which are moved outwards as 'the metal moves into the cross bores. Fig. 6 shows the second stage of pressing, after annealing, if necessary, where the bends 39, 41 are thicker where strength is most required, the dies being rounded at these parts, to facilitate this formation. The closed ends of the T are then cut off and the bores enlarged at the mouth 64, Fig. 8 by plug dies 60. Fig. 14 shows an X made with a steel plug 78 temporarily located in the bottom of the tubular blank. A Y- connection, Fig. 21, is made by reforming a T-connection, or a Y or double Y, with a small angle 86, can be pressed out by the same process in suitable dies. The fittings may also be made with one opening smaller than the others as in Fig. 18 by die pressing or by enlarging the other openings. To make asymmetrical fittings the top of the tube blank and /or the shoulder of the die may be on the skew to cause greater flow of metal in one required direction.
