Abstract

463,510. Vehicle wheel arrangements. HUDSON, J. DONALDSON-. Feb. 29, 1936, No. 6134. [Class 108 (ii)] In a tractor-trailer combination the front end of the trailer is provided with a road wheel permanently in contact with the ground and pivoted to afford a castor action and means may be provided for raising and lowering the front end of the trailer. The trailer 11 is connected to the tractor 10 by means of a towing arm 12 pivoted to the trailer frame at 13. The road wheel comprising twin wheels 14 is mounted in a frame 15 pivotal by means of its axis 16 in a cross-frame 17 which is connected to the side frames 18 of the trailer by springs 19. The front ends of the springs 19 are pivoted at 20 to the towing arm 12 and at the rear are connected to a pivoted shackle 21 having a number of holes 22 for adjustment purposes. An hydraulic cylinder 25 and ram 28 arrangement is connected to the towing arm 12 and the trailer frame 11 for raising and lowering the latter. To lower the trailer the rear ends of the springs 19 are disconnected from the shackle 21 and the hydraulic device allowed to telescope until the side frames 18 rest on the ground when the rear ends of the springs may be connected to the lower ends of the hydraulic device which is disconnected from the trailer frame and by disconnecting the towing arm from the trailer frame, the towing arm, castor wheel and hydraulic devices can be removed from the trailer frame. The castor wheel may be locked or prevented from swivelling by means of a pivoted bar engaging slots in the head of the pivot 16 or in a castellated nut on the pivot. In a modification, the shank of the castor wheel may form the ram of the hydraulic elevating device in which case an adjustable strut is arranged between the arm 12 and the trailer frame 11.
