[Class 5 (ii)] To facilitate cleaning from beneath battery cages for poultry, the cages are suspended so that they may be moved without disconnection from their supporting means. As shown in Fig. 1, two sets of battery cages with back-to-back compartments 2, 3 for laying hens are suspended from flexible members 25 passing over pulleys and adapted to be operated to raise one set of cages and lower the other set by a handle 37. In some cases, the cages are mounted on levers, or are provided with rollers running in guides suspended from the roof of the building. The transverse partitions between the cages are formed of wires 5, Fig. 2, depending from their upper ends so as to be free to swing in the meshes of the base 4, and thereby prevent the accumulation of vermin &c. The bottom 7 of each tier of cages is formed as a chain mesh band supporting a band 8 of waterproofed or tarred paper to receive the droppings. The droppings are removed by winding the band 7 on a roller and allowing the paper 8 to pass a scraper whereby the droppings pass into one compartment of a wheeled truck, while the used paper passes into a separate compartment. In some cases, the chain mesh band 7 is endless, means being provided for the attachment thereto of the tarred paper. The base 4 slopes towards egg-collecting troughs 39, while the water and food troughs 17, 16 are formed with roll edges and are hinged to the fronts of the cages. They may be pivoted at their lower edges and be held in operative position by wires 19.
