Abstract
<PICT:0462922/IV/1> <PICT:0462922/IV/2> <PICT:0462922/IV/3> <PICT:0462922/IV/4> <PICT:0462922/IV/5> <PICT:0462922/IV/6> Yarn 69 immediately before passing to a knitting or other fabricating machine is conditioned in a sectioned box B fitted with water troughs or supplied with vapour from a humidifier H. The humidifier may be controlled by a humidistat P in the box B, and the temperature of the water &c. in the humidifier by a thermostat 237. The box B consists of a number of open-ended abutting sections E, F slid laterally into C-shaped brackets 33 mounted at intervals on the bed of the knitting machine. The end sections E may be permanently closed at one end, or loose ends 225 provided with spring clips 227 may be used. Sliding glass doors 65 at the back and front of each section give access to the yarn packages 68. Each yarn 69 passes through an eyelet 72 in the box top over one or other of several rails 46, through a liquid trough 48, through a tensioning ring 62 under a "snapper" 57, over one or other of several rails 55 and on to the sinker head &c. assembly S of the knitting or other machine. The vapour may be blown from near the centre of the box B towards the two ends from nozzles 159, or may be supplied direct from the pipes 153, 154 through short nozzles passing through the bottoms of the several box sections E, F and these nozzles may increase in size the further they are away from the humidifier. The humidifier comprises a liquid chamber 107 with valve - controlled inlet 217 and overflow pipe 218. The liquid is drawn up a cone 147 carried by the spindle 143 of a motor M and is then thrown by the disc 146 (also fixed to the motor spindle) against the grid 134 where it is broken up into a spray and then passes up the funnel 117 at the mouth 119 of which it meets air supplied by the fan 104 driven by a motor N. The motors M, N are controlled by the humidistat P; this consists of a number of horse hairs &c. 193 fixed at one end to an adjustable stud 199 and at the other end to one arm 202 of a lever 184 pivoted at 185 and biassed in one direction by a spring 189. An arm 186 pivoted at 187 to the lever 184 and steadied relatively thereto by a spring 188 is forked at its upper end to engage the bracket 195 pivoted at 196 and carrying the mercury tube 168 of a mercury switch. A pendulum 182 assists in the correct setting of the apparatus. The current for the heaters 260, 261 in the liquid chamber 107 is controlled by a switch 255 itself controlled by another switch 229, 239 operated by a bellows 235 connected by a pipe 236 with a bulb 237 in the chamber 107. The bellows &c. are filled with some incompressible liquid. The panel 242 carrying the contact 239 is adjustable by a worm 246 about the pivot 233.
