Abstract

Carboxylic acid amides derived from aza compounds are prepared by condensing esters of enolizable keto-carboxylic acids of monoaza compounds, the aza nitrogen atom of which is in a six-membered ring and which contain no other hetero atom besides nitrogen, with compounds containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom attached to nitrogen. The acid-esters used as starting materials correspond to the formul <FORM:0462650/IV/1> wherein R is the residue of a monaza compound as specified above, R<1> is hydrogen or an alkyl group and X is an esterified carboxylic acid group. Compounds of which R is the residue, which are mentioned are azanaphthalenes, azaphenanthrenes (cf. Specification 451,932) azanthracenes, azatriphenylenes, (prepared by a Skraup synthesis from 9- or 10-aminophenanthrenes), azacarbazoles (prepared by dehydrating by means of copper at elevated temperatures the hexahydrocarbazoles described in Specification 360,027) and azabenzanthracenes (prepared by treating pyridinoanthraquinones with reducing agents). The enolisable keto-carboxylic acid esters thereof may be prepared from the amino compounds by diazotizing and a Sandmeyer replacement to a cyano group, saponifying, esterifying and condensing the carboxylic acid ester with the sodium compound of acetoacetic acid ethyl ester. Those esters wherein R<1> is alkyl are prepared by condensing the alkali metal compounds of those esters wherein R<1> is hydrogen with alkyl halides. In examples: 6-quinolinoyl acetic acid ester (prepared by condensing quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ester with acetic acid ethyl ester in presence of sodium ethylate and boiling benzene) is condensed with a -naphthylamine, 4-chloro-2.5-dimethoxyaniline, methylamine, ethanolamine, butylamines, octodecylamines, octodecenylamines, cyclohexylamines, aralkylamines such as phenylethylamine, tetrahydroazanaphthalene or 2-aminopyridine. Reference is also made to the condensation of pyridinoyl-acetic ester (prepared by condensing nicotinic acid ethyl ester with acetoacetic ester in presence of alkali) with 10-amino-4-azaphenanthrene or 5-amino-2-azaphenanthrene, and of quinolinoyl-5.8-bis-acetic ester or pyridinoyl-3.5-bis-acetic ester (prepared by condensing the corresponding acids with acetoacetic ester in presence of alkali) with 3-, 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-, or 10-amino-4-azaphenanthrenes, 5-, 6- or 8-amino-1-azaphenanthrenes or amino-2-azaphenanthrene (prepared from sulphonated 2-azaphenanthrene by first converting the sulpho group to hydroxy and replacing the latter by the amino group).
