Abstract

462,464. Directive wireless signalling. COOPER, A. H. Sept. 7, 1935, No. 24976. [Class 40 (v)] In a wireless directional equipment, suitable for guiding an aeroplane down a landing beam, the machine carries a dipole aerial 3, Fig. 2, which is wind-driven about its centre so as to trace out two cones about a common axis in the normal direction of flight. As shown in Fig. 3, the dipole is geared at 8, 9 to a shaft 7 which carries two contact-arms 19, 20 sweeping over the segments 14 . . . 17 of a commutator. Signal voltage from the aerial is fed through a receiver 6 to a load resistance 18, one end of which is connected to the segments 14 and 16, and the other end to the segments 15 and 17. The contact-arm 20, which only touches the segments 16, 17, is connected to an " up or down " indicator 11, whilst the arm 19 which only contacts with the segments 14, 15 is connected to a "right or left " indicator 10. Corresponding indications are given when the axis of the rotating dipole deviates. from the line connecting it to the transmitting beacon. The correct gliding track may be followed with the help of a marker beacon, or by making successive changes in the inclination of the dipole aerial to the normal direction of flight.
