Abstract
462,362. Optical systems. HOE & CO., Ltd., R. Sept. 9, 1935, Nos. 25098 and 25099. Convention dates, Sept. 8, 1934 and Aug. 6, 1935. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] Means for producing stationary images of regularly recurring impressions on a web continuously fed through a printing-machine comprises a continuously-rotated rotor carrying reflecting surfaces ; the images are observed through a telescope, and may be reflected thereto from the rotor by a mirror which is rocked to correct slight errors in the compensation for web movement effected by the rotor. Rollers arranged between the sets of printing rollers are adapted to be adjusted to maintain registration of the printed impressions. Various forms of observation devices are described, all embodying a rotor 81, having light-reflecting surfaces 82 and rotated synchronously with the running web. The rotor may extend across the complete width of the web, or may extend only partly across and be adjustable in lateral position ; it may be adjustable to and from the web. In one form, the member 81 is driven through a differential gearing comprising sun and planet gears from one of the printing cylinders &c. A hand-operated worm enables the outer casing of the differential gearing to be rotated, so that the rotating member 81 may be driven faster or slower than the web. As shown, the rotor 81 is driven from a motor 85 by a worm 87 or by a flexible shaft, both of which are also manually adjustable to advance or retard the rotor 81 relatively to the web. The light rays from the mirrors 82 are reflected by a mirror 84 into the telescope 83. The mirror 84 is mounted on a rock-shaft which is oscillated from a cam mounted on the shaft carrying the reflecting member 81. A mirror, or two parallel mirrors may reflect light from the web to the rotor 81 and, to maintain the light path constant in length, the two mirrors may be moved simultaneously by screwthreaded shafts when an adjustment transversely of the web is made. Means may also be provided for maintaining the mirrors parallel during this movement.
