[Class 6 (ii)] A tool for extracting weeds or other plants comprises two or more cutters or digging members c mounted on spring strips b, Fig. 1, or on one rigid strip a and a spring strip b, Fig. 3. The strips are either integral with or connected to a rigid handle H. The cutters c are positioned in oblique relationship so as to converge as they enter the ground and on extraction are held together by means operated by the fingers of a hand grasping the handle. In one form of these devices, Fig. 1, levers l are attached to the strips b and bent to form handles h which can be pulled by hand to draw the cutters together. Where one rigid strip a is provided, one lever only, Fig. 3, fitted to the strip b is necessary. In another form, a handle loop is mounted on chains or other flexible members below the handle H and between the strips b. The strips may also be urged together by rollers r, Fig. 6, mounted on links k, n, forming a cage embracing the strips b and such that the strips are moved together by drawing the cage towards the handle H. In another form, levers mounted on brackets fixed to the handle 4, at one end engage the strips externally and, passing through slots in the strips, at their other ends form operating handles. The tool may be mounted on a long handle and be provided with a tread and the spring strip compressing devices may be operated by a rod sliding in guides on the handle. The cutters c may be detachable and may be forked or clawed or of semi-conical form and the forks or claws may be interdigitating.
