Abstract
462,292. Guiding skip hoists ; loading skips ; delivering material from hoppers. BIRTLEY CO., Ltd. (Roberts & Schaefer Co.) July 27, 1935, No. 21405. [Classes 78 (i), 78 (iii), and 78 (iv)] In skip-winding apparatus having hinged skip loading and discharge gates 10, 2, Fig. 8, automatically operated by the movement of the skip 1 and locked during travel of the skip by latches 14, 3 released by the skip at appropriate parts of its travel, means are provided for removing the pressure of the gates from the latches prior to the release of the latter and for causing the gates to open in a controlled manner, the said means being constituted by the gates or members attached thereto and suitably shaped coacting surfaces on the receptacle into which the material is to be discharged. The skip is loaded at the bottom of a mine shaft from a shoot 19 normally closed by the gate 10, locked by a pivoted catch 14, Fig. 5, engaging teeth 18 on the gate. As the skip approaches the loading position a roller 12 on the gate 10 engages the vertical part of a 1 -shaped guide 11 on the skip so that the gate is pressed inwards to release the pressure on the catch 14. Whilst the pressure is thus released a guide 13 on the skip engages a roller 15 and raises the catch 14 clear of the teeth 18. Further downward movement of the skip causes the roller 12 to travel along the horizontal part of the guide 11 and thus allow the gate 10 to open gradually as the skip reaches its lowest position. When the skip is raised the roller 12 moves back along the guide 11 and closes the gate, and the guide 13 engages the roller 15 to lift and then drop the catch 14 while the guide 11 holds the gate closed. At the top of the hoist the skip gate 2 is similarly opened and closed, a roller 6 on the gate engaging a fixed 1-shaped guide 5, Fig. 1, and the locking catch 3 having a roller 9 engaging a fixed guide 7 for releasing and engaging the catch. The gates 2, 10 are similar and each is pivoted on a hollow shaft 22, Fig. 10. The bottom plate 32 of the gate carries a plate 30 which rests on the fixed hollow shaft 22 so that when the gate rotates on the shaft the plate scrapes against the shaft and prevents spillage of coal. The gate catches 8 or 14 are fixed to the side plates of the gate and are formed with two teeth 33, 34 so that as wear takes place the pivoted catch 3 or 14 will always engage a tooth. The front plate 37 of the skip, Fig. 9, has an opening which is high at the centre and low at each side to allow free delivery of coal at the centre as the gate 2 opens and to restrict the flow at the sides and avoid spilling.
