[Class 5 (i)] An apparatus for cutting and shredding sugar cane comprises a casing 2, having an inlet 3 for the cane and an outlet 24 for the cut cane, a rotating shaft 7 extending transversely of the casing, a plurality of transversely extending blades 8 carried by the shaft and a plurality of yieldably or resiliently mounted .transverse blades 12 in close proximity to the circumferential path struck by the rotating blades on the shaft 7. The blades 8 are preferably reversible and are carried on spiders 10, the arms of adjacent spiders being staggered with respect to each other. Alternate cutters of each spider may be straight edged and the intermediate cutters serrated. The blades 12 are carried between curved arms 11, a number of such units being independently mounted on the shaft 11<a>. Each unit is connected by a link 15 and bell-crank 16 to a strong spring 17. The blades 12 are accommodated in slots in the inner faces of the arms 11 and are bolted to lugs projecting from the said faces, the bolt holes being elongated to permit adjustment. In a modification, Fig. 5, the ends of the blades 12 are received in longitudinal recesses 21, and are spaced by packing pieces 22. A baffle 2<a> directs the cane to the cutting zone and a baffle 25 prevents the cut cane from being carried back over the rotating cutters. The apparatus may be located between two crushing-mills, or it may discharge on to a conveyer 24<a> which carries it to the first mill or crushing-rollers.
