Figs. 7 and 9 show alternative methods of securing the free end d<SP>1</SP> of a loop of a longitudinal string embracing a portion of the thatching material to the adjacent ends d<SP>2</SP>, d<SP>3</SP> of a longitudinal string and to a pin or bar d<SP>5</SP>. The loops may be formed by a curved needle a Fig. 1, having a slotted eye a<SP>2</SP> adapted to carry a thatching string and straight needle c slidable across the curved needle and having a hook c<SP>2</SP> adapted to receive the string in the form of a loop from the eye a<SP>2</SP> . In another form, a curved needle having a slotted part e<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 10, and a handle e<SP>1</SP> is used. Lengths of string for the longitudinal strings may each be carried by a bobbin #, Fig. 11, rotatable by a handle #<SP>2</SP> and mounted on a stem provided with a hooked end g<SP>2</SP> by which it can be hung on a ladder &c.
