Abstract

460,677. Charging batteries. KOEHLER MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 30, 1935, No. 35945. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1934. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] In a miner's lamp comprising a headpiece containing an electric lamp, and a storage battery charging terminals for the battery are exposed on the headpiece and a device inside the headpiece normally holds open a connection between one of the charging terminals and the battery, both manual and magnetic actuation of the device being necessary to close the connection. The headpiece 2 which may be of hard rubber or cellulose acetate has at the back a metal clip 3 for fastening to a miner's cap &c., and in the headpiece is a main lamp 4 and a smaller emergency lamp 5 mounted in holders on a removable insulating bracket 10. The lamp 4 has two filaments connected to separate terminals in the base of the lamp, the circuits being completed through the socket. A switch arm 37 operated by an outside knob 42 connects one terminal of the battery with any one of contacts 18<1>, 19<1> or 26<1> connected to the two filaments of lamp 4 and the lamp 5. The clip 3 is connected with the lamp sockets through a conducting bar 30 and is also connected to the other terminal of the battery. The back of the headpiece carries two terminals 44, 45 connected together and to a rock-shaft 47, Fig. 9, carrying a contact arm 48. Movement of the contact 48 is limited and a spring 5 maintains it out of the path of the switch arm 37. The rock-shaft also carries an armature 51 and when it is required to charge the battery, the headpiece is placed in the field of an electromagnet 52 as in Fig. 9 whereby the armature is rotated to move the contact 48 into the path of the switch arm 37. The knob 42 is then rotated to swing the switch arm into engagement with the contact 48, which contact is provided with a lip 54 entering a notch 55 in the switch arm. This operation completes the circuit between one side of the battery and the terminals 44, 45. To charge the battery, the headpiece is placed on a charging rack comprising an insulating bar 56, Fig. 7, slotted at 57. The clip 3 enters the slot 57 thereby making contact with a metal plate 58, and the terminals 44, 45 contact with ribs 62 on a second plate 61 insulated from the first. A number of these charging points may be connected in series and a spring 66 which normally shortcircuits a point is moved aside when a headpiece is inserted in the rack. To improve contact, a spring may be riveted to the plate 58 inside the groove 57, and the outer contact 61 may be in two parts as shown in Fig. 10.
