Abstract
460,365. Toys. HAY, J. M. June 21, 1935, No. 17854. [Class 132 (iii)] A toy device for simulating the evolutions of a flying machine comprises an aeroplane 2, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by eyelets 13 to a bridge-piece 12 connected by a loop 17 and hook 18 to a cord 24 of twine, thread or rubber connected by a hook 27 to a ring 29 encircling a pin 28 partially embedded in the end of the cane rod 25 which can be moved by hand. A tail skid 11 is attached to the underside of the fuselage at its rear end by means of glue or other adhesive and is of thin copper wire or other pliant light material so that it can be twisted to alter the angle of incidence of the plane on the ground. The eyelets 13 to which the bridge piece 12 is connected are formed of twisted wire with the ends 15 splayed out beneath the wing and in some cases bent back round the edge of the wing at 16 to lock the eyelet against movement. The ends of the bridge piece 12 may be passed through the eyelets 13 and twisted or may be provided with swivel portions for detachable connection with the eyelets. The aeroplane may be of the " pusher " type as shown in Fig. 3 in which the fuselage 20 is of skeleton formation and the wings 21 are bent up slightly towards the ends. The ends of the bridge piece are elbowed at 22 and turned back in a detachable manner through the eyelets 13 so that the aeroplane can be flown in an inverted position. The propeller 4, Figs. 8 and 9, is loosely mounted on a pin 5, and a bearing 30 in the form of a sleeve, Fig. 8, or bead, Fig. 9, of glass or metal is embedded in the propeller 4 and held by glue. The bearing 30 projects slightly from the rear of the propeller to save wear of the latter and contacts with a bead or sleeve 26 of hard material loosely threaded on the pin 5 or with a washer or ring 31 of hard material on the nose of the aeroplane to set up a humming noise or a buzz when the propeller is rotating. If desired bead 26 and washer 31 can be used together. The aeroplane can be furnished with cockpits in which light wood figures 38, Fig. 3, can be placed, the figures being preferably provided with arms formed by pins passing through them. Miniature instruments or guns may also be arranged on the aeroplane and, with the toy figures 38, may be used as weight adjusters. The aeroplanes may have a plurality of propellers and several aeroplanes may be suspended from a single rod 25.
