Abstract

459,573. Drilling. HOPKINSONS, Ltd., BROWN, R. L., and METCALFE, T., Britannia Works, Wheathouse Road, Huddersfield. Feb. 5, 1936, No. 3446. [Class 83 (iii)] A centre - drilling machine has a workpiece vice with jaws which are hydraulically operated simultaneously towards or away from one another, one jaw being moved directly by the hydraulic motor and the other being moved simultaneously in opposite direction by gearing actuated by the motor. The vice is secured in framework supported directly above the pedestal 5, Fig. 2, the right-hand jaw s being adjustably secured to the piston v by a tonguepiece w and adjusting screw y and clamping screws 2. The other jaw t is simultaneously operated by a rack 3 on the piston member engaging a toothed wheel 4 which engages a rack 5 cut on the underside of the jaw. The drilling head c, Fig. 1, is carried at one end of a beam q, the other end of which carries worksupporting devices 11, 12. The head c carries two parallel spindles, one for a drill and the other for a countersink which may be brought, in turn, into line with the central axis of the machine by swivelling the head about its support, the motion being limited by adjustable stops. The handle g moves the tools, one being fed towards the work while the other is simultaneously retracted. The electric motor p for driving the spindles through the belts d, e also drives, through a sprocket chain 7, a pump 15, the control of pressure fluid from which is effected by a valve 6, Fig. 2, thus determining whether the vice-jaws are moved towards or away from one another. An end-stop 12a is provided for positioning the work and cutting fluid may be supplied by a vessel 9.
