[Class 60] In a machine for grinding screw-threads, particularly on long thin rods, the work-piece is provided with an initial or starting thread along a short portion of its length and is supported and centred by a member opposite the grinding-wheel ; the starting thread engages a lead element and feeds the work axially at the beginning of the grinding operation, the thread as it is ground causing the feeding as the grinding proceeds. The machine comprises a single- or multi - ribbed grinding - wheel S mounted adjustably on a frame 7, and the work W is supported by a guide member 1 having secured thereto a lead element 2 in the form of part of a nut to engage the thread on the work ; the element 2 may be separate from the member 1. The work W is supported by a guide box 12 and is driven at one end by a bushing 18 rotatably carried by a slide 15, which is guided by rollers 16 thereon and cylindrical guides 14, a weight 27 and cord 28 urging the work axially, and the work being driven by an electric motor 24 through chain gearing 25, 26 and a shaft 22. Means for forming the initial thread on the work may be provided on the machine.
