Abstract
<PICT:0458964/III/1> <PICT:0458964/III/2> In a plant for regenerating spent lubricating, transformer, or turbine oils, of the kind comprising a heating and de-watering device and a filtering device, the heating and de-watering device comprises a pipe or pipe coil through which the oil passes, the pipe or coil being provided with perforations at its lower part and having a steam pipe united with its under side so that the steam, conducted in counter current to the oil, penetrates through the perforations into the oil pipe and passes to a condenser carrying along with it any hydrocarbons of lower boiling point contained in the spent oil. As shown in Fig. 1, the plant comprises a reservoir 1 supplying spent oil through the pipe 2 to a heating coil 5 the upper end of which communicates with a condenser 23, and the lower end of which delivers into a mixer 12 connected by a pump 14 to a filter 15. The coil 5 is provided on the under side with a coil 6, Figs. 1 and 5, to which steam is supplied by a pipe 8, the part of the coil 5 covered by the coil 6 being provided with perforations 7. The composite coil 5, 6 may be square in plan view with cleaning holes at the corners, or may be replaced by a straight composite pipe. The pipe 2 may be provided with a U-shaped section 3 surrounded by a U-shaped section formed in the delivery pipe 11 of the coil 5, whereby the spent oil is preheated. The heating coil, or a bath 9 surrounding it, is controllably heated by gas, electricity or steam. The condensed light hydrocarbons and steam are delivered from the condenser 23 to a separating vessel 24 provided with overflow pipes 24<b>, 24<c> for hydrocarbons and water respectively, the pipe 24<c> extending to the bottom of the vessel. The vessel is suspended on pivots 25 at one side of its centre and thus tips, to one side or the other, in accordance with the preponderance of hydrocarbon or oil within it. The treated oil delivered from the heating coil 5 is mixed with a purifying agent, e.g. hydrosilicate of aluminium, in the mixer 12, and is then pumped through the filter 15 which comprises a perforated fitting 16 surrounded by layers 19 of metal gauze covered by a filter cloth or paper 20 or by a layer of fibrous or granulated filtering material deposited from suspension in a liquid. The gauze layers are elastically deformed by the filtering pressure, but return to their original shape when the pressure ceases, thus loosening the deposited slime. A battery of filtering devices may be connected to a common delivery pipe leading from the pump. To facilitate removal and replacement of the filtering fitting 16, a wheeled carriage is provided having a horizontal bar adapted to be brought into engagement with the fitting, whereby, after loosening the bolts 18, the fitting may be removed suspended on the bar. A drip pan is provided beneath the bar. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 23044/36. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
