Abstract

<PICT:0458669/III/1> Carbonaceous materials, e.g. coal, are destructively distilled by heating the coal &c. in finely-divided form in a reaction vessel or tower by hot scavenging gases fed through tangential slits formed in an inner shell of the tower into which coal dust, tar or oils are injected in a finely divided or atomized state in such quantities, e.g. up to 8 per cent. that the temperature of the reaction is unaffected. Coal dust is fed with cold gas from a tube 24 through a preheater 23 into a reaction tower 26 heated by hot gases introduced through a pipe 25 and tangential slits 27 formed in shells 28. Small quantities of coal dust are injected through pipes 11 and nozzle plates 12 so that the zones of spray, which are directed at a slight downward angle, overlap. The vapours formed are removed through an outlet 31 and the dust through an outlet 29. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a process and apparatus for cracking oils in which the oils are passed through a tubular cracking unit, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), comprising ascending and descending pipes 5, 6, and small quantities of oil under high pressure are injected at the bends through pipes 11 having nozzles 12, the pipes being protected by insulation 13. A modified plant, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), is also described comprising a double coil system 7 provided with non-return valves 14 and delivery pipes 15 leading to servomotors 16 so that the clogged pipes may be scavenged. The cracked products pass to a flashing vessel and dephlegmator 18 into which cold oil &c. may be injected through nozzles 12.
