Abstract

Cellulose nitrate is obtained by treating cellulosic raw material with a nitrating medium containing chlorine in an amount substantially less than the weight of the cellulose. There may be added to a normal nitrating acid mixture an amount of hydrochloric acid which is less than the weight of the cellulose material to be treated. The viscosity characteristics of the cellulose nitrate produced may be varied by adjustment of the proportion of chlorine in the nitrating medium, an increase in the amount of chlorine resulting in a decrease in viscosity of the cellulose nitrate. Products suitable for making lacquers or plastic masses may be directly obtained. In an example, bleached pine wood cellulose containing resin impurities are nitrated with a mixture of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and water, containing an addition of hydrochloric acid. A pure white cellulose nitrate is obtained. In another example cotton linters are treated with a mixture of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, water and hydrochloric acid. The process enables pure white cellulose nitrate to be obtained directly from off-white cellulosic raw material.
