Abstract
458,043. Casting hollow structures in situ. HOLLOWAY BROS. (LONDON), Ltd., WILSON, W. S., and SULLY, F. W., 157, Millbank, London. Aug. 14, 1935, No. 22909. [Class 20 (ii)] Shutters for use in the casting of hollow concrete structures of circular or polygonal cross-section are attached to substantially vertical supports adapted to be moved inwardly or outwardly by means of a double system of hing- ed links, each linkage system being arranged to form a polygon. The inner and outer shutters a<1>, a2 are each formed of a plurality of segments, each of which comprises a group of staves a attached to a pair of horizontally-arranged angle-irons b, as shown in Fig. 2. The extended ends of adjacent angle-irons b are adapted to overlap to an extent depending on the diameter to which the shuttering is arranged, and are held in place by pins c engaging slots d in the angle-irons b. The shutter segments are secured to vertical supports g, h attached to the angleirons b and extending above the tops of the shutters. The two linkage systems are connected to the upper ends of the supports g, h, and each consists of hinged links e arranged in star shape as shown in Fig. 1. The outer pivot pins f of these links e are connected to radial arms j which carry the supports h at their inner ends, and the supports g are carried by the inner points of the linkage system. The corresponding links e, j of the two systems are connected together by bracing members. The inward and outward movement of the linkage system, and therefore of the shuttering, is effected by nuts on pivotally-mounted screwthreaded rods k connecting the supports h. The apparatus is adapted to be raised intermittently as the height of the structure increases, by means of jacks p, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The jacks are mounted on each of the posts g, h and are adapted to grip the reinforcing rods q, which project above the concrete already cast and extend for the full height of the structure. The gaps between adjacent shutter segments are adapted to be closed by tapered closures. The upper and lower portions, respectively, of Figs. 1 and 2 show the arrangements of the parts in expanded and contracted position.
