[Class 134] An umbrella or parasol comprises telescopic stick sections 1, 2, 3 and telescopic rib sections 12, 13, 14 wherein a folding doublearmed support 15, 16 is secured to the outer sections of each rib, is connected to the middle section 13 by pivoted stays 18, 19, and serves to carry the cover and to extend or collapse the rib. A plate 9, provided with a groove in which the cover is secured, is rotatably mounted on the stick. Telescopic members 4, 5 are adapted to be rotated by the plate 9 in order that discs 6 thereon may engage with grooves in the stick sections to lock the stick in the extended position. A spring rotates the plate 9 to its original position. Stretchers 20 are pivoted to one end of the rib section 13 and to the runner 23 provided with the usual locking means. Each rib is pivoted to a member 8 through a head 22 to which is pivoted a strap 21 the other end of which slides on the member 16. The straps 21 are held by the plate 9 against the member 8. When the plate is rotated the straps can move in grooves 11 in the plate 9 to allow the members 15, 16 to rotate to expand the ribs. To open the umbrella, the handle which normally houses the cover is withdrawn and locked by a pawl 25 ; the plate 9 is then rotated and the stick and ribs expanded. The plate 9 is then allowed to return to its original position to lock the stick and ribs in their extended position. The runner may then be operated in the usual manner to open the umbrella. The rib elements may also be secured in the extended position by catches on the hinges 17 or in the heads 22.
