[Class 56] Relates to apparatus for cutting- off lengths from a strip of glass as it rises from the leer of a drawing-apparatus of the vertical type. According to the invention, a pivoted frame receives the rising strip and, as soon as the glass is cut, swings downwards into the horizontal position where the cutoff section is carried off the frame which then returns to the vertical position. The strip of glass 1, as it rises vertically, passes over an idle roller 2 and a driven roller 3 and is engaged by two pairs of rollers 4, 5 and 6, 7. These rollers, which are driven from the roller 3, are carried by a frame 8 which is pivoted on the shaft 9 of the roller 3. The frame is rotated between the vertical and horizontal positions by an hydraulic cylinder 15 acting through a link 12 and a crank 11. The operation of the cylinder is controlled by an electric circuit that includes a switch 50 which is engaged by the forward edge of the glass strip 1. In operation, the glass is scored transversely by a cutting device of the kind described in Specification 456,822. and as soon as the scored line is opposite the point of contact with the rollers 3, the front edge of the glass moves the switch 50. The cylinder 15 then swings the frame 8 into the horizontal position, and in so doing snaps the glass along the scored line. In the horizontal position, the rollers 5 and 7 are forced apart from the rollers 4, 6 respectively, and the cut-off length of glass is carried off rapidly from the frame by means of rollers 17. As soon as the moving glass passes beyond the switch 50, the stroke of the cylinder is reversed and the frame 8 is restored to the vertical position in time for the rollers 4, 5 to receive the edge of the rising glass. In a modification, the rollers 4, 6 are driven through free wheel clutches, and in the horizontal position of the frame these rollers are driven at higher speed by a chain which engages sprocket wheels on the rollers. The removal of the glass may also be effected by gravity, the frame being turned from the vertical through an angle greater than a right angle.
