Abstract
316,354. Pilkington Bros., Ltd., and Lemare, E. B. May 1, 1928. Roller-way conveyers.-Relates to the method of making plate or sheet glass in which glass strips, produced intermittently, are received on a roller conveyer by which they are carried to and through a leer, and means are provided for reducing the speed of the rollers, after the glass has set, in order that the leer may be of reasonable' length. According to the invention, the roller bed consists of a number of groups of rollers A - - D, Fig. 1, driven through free wheel clutches, the speed of rotation of the rollers of each group being less than that of the rollers of the preceding group. A glass strip is received from the forming-machine by the group A. of rollers and is fed into the leer 1 at a speed of 30 feet a minute, say, and its speed is reduced when it reaches group D, to 3 feet a minute. In another form of the invention, the speed of the rollers is so varied as to retard the speed of the strip gradually. This may be effected by driving the rollers positively through variable speed devices. It may also be effected by driving alternate rollers by or through reversible variable speed devices, the rollers driving the strip forwards being separated by rollers driven in the reverse direction at a speed which can be varied, so that the effective speed of the roller bed as a whole can be varied.
