Abstract

457,051. Rudders. PAINE, H. SCOTT-, c/o British Power Boat Co., Hythe, Southampton. June 20, 1935, No. 17751. [Class 114] In boats having multiple rudders they are connected so that the rudders move unequally but appropriate to the radii of their respective turning circles. Rudders 11, 12, 13 are mounted at the stern and coupled by rods 17, 18 to steering arms 14, 15, 16 which are disposed at slight angles to each other analogous to the Ackerman steering employed on motor cars, the set being operated by levers 19 and a steering rod 20. In an alternative construction, the levers operate through a slot mechanism so that on operating the steering gear the first rudder to turn is the inner rudder and after a lag movement is imparted successively to the other rudders. In place of the pin-and-slot mechanism, the lost-motion device may be included in a cable-operated system of which the drums have a lost-motion connection with the steering shaft.
