[Class 112] [See also Group IX] The attachment described in Specification 455,095 for stitching loops of rope or the like to a backing to form rugs, is improved to permit the loops to be stitched in any desired and evenly spaced relationship by an unskilled operator. The attachment replaces the usual presser foot on the presser bar and consists of a foot carrying a fabric-engaging part 12, a work guide 21, a segmental rope yarn laying member 27 operated by the needlebar 2 and a loop-detaining finger 40. The usual needle-clamping screw is replaced by one with an elongated shank 33, 34 for engaging cheeks on a member 37 pivoted to the ropelaying segment 27 for oscillating this when the needle bar is vibrated. Starting with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, as the needle descends, the rope-laying member 27 is swung to the left about its pivot 23 forming a base loop 51, Fig. 7, in its rear. This loop is entered by the needle. As the member 27 continues its movement, the loop 51 is tightened about the needle and the finger 40 is withdrawn from the previous loop, being lifted as the cross-bar 26 of the member 27 engages its hooked part 45. When the motion of the rope-laying member 27 is reversed by the rise of the needle-bar, a new tip-loop 53, Fig. 8, is formed. This loop is entered by the finger 40 which descends under the action of the spring 49. As this action is repeated, the base loops 51 are sewn to the fabric base 54 by the line of stitches 55. The bases of the loops of the previously stitched row are guided by the edge-guide 21 and pass under the guard-flange 14 of the tread member 12 which protects these loops from being caught by the point 41 of the finger 40. The feed dog works in conjunction with the bottom-surface of the tread member 12 which serves as the presser foot. The shank part 42 of the finger 40 is inclined, Fig. 13, so that the loops are inclined and fit snugly together. The fabric formed is shown in Fig. 15.
