Abstract

<PICT:0456581/III/1> Relates to a method of producing fine dispersions of gases in liquids, for obtaining aerated liquids, emulsions, or dispersions of gases in solids, or for effecting chemical reactions such as oxidations or reductions. The gas is dispersed in the liquid in a state of rarefaction of from ,01 to ,001 atmospheres, and the state of rarefaction is then removed. The gas, already rarefied, may be dispersed in the liquid medium, or it may be dispersed in the vapour of the latter, which is then condensed; or it may be rarefied with another gas which is soluble in, or can be condensed to a liquid miscible with, the liquid dispersing medium. As shown in Fig. 1, the liquid dispersing medium in a container 2 is circulated, by a pump 8, through a path which includes a jet pump 7. The latter draws in the gas to be dispersed and vapour of the liquid medium from the sources 3, 1 under the control of valves, not shown. In a modification, the liquid is circulated by a rotary pump, and the gas and vapour are supplied to the centre of the rotary system. In another modification, Fig. 4, the liquid medium is passed from 9 to 2 by a pump 8 and a jet pump 7 which is so operated that the liquid is converted to its vapour isothermally. The gas to be dispersed is drawn into the jet pump from 3 under control of a valve or capillary restriction. In modifications of this form, the jet pump is replaced by a rotary pump. In other modifications, gas at reduced pressure is produced electrolytically, or is subjected to ozonizing or other electrical treatment before dispersion. The dispersed systems produced as described may be stabilized by protective colloids, &c., and may be maintained under increased pressure. To obtain dispersions of gases in solids, for example plastics, the gas is dispersed while the solid is in molten or dissolved condition. Similarly, emulsions may be obtained if the gas, after dispersion in the liquid medium, is itself condensed. Specifications 22666/01, [Class 14], and 286,316, [Class 1 (i)], are referred to.
