Abstract

455,863. Moulding briquettes. RICE, J. H., Cambrian Buildings, Cardiff. April 27, 1935, No. 12670. [Class 87 (ii)] A machine for briquetting coal or other material with or without the addition of agglomerating materials such as pitch, comprises a number of moulding devices driven by a crankshaft 16, each moulding device consisting of a plunger 24 working within a sleeve 28 provided with a feed box 29, which, in one position of the sleeve receives a charge of material from a hopper extension 30, after which the sleeve is advanced to form, with a yieldable plunger 36, a closed moulding chamber into which the material from the box 29 falls. The briquetting material is supplied to hoppers 31 in which it is agitated by rotary blades 39. The mould may have a lining of any required section and the plungers 24, 36 may have detachable heads 53, 62 to produce briquettes of desired form. Fluid pressure is admitted behind the plunger 36 by a hand controlled valve and a relief valve 46 and air vessel 47 are provided to render the operation of the plunger free from shock. The sleeve 28 is actuated by linkage 34, 32, by a cam 26 on the crankshaft 16, this cam also being formed with the crank pin 22 operating the connecting-rod 23 driving the plunger 24. The sleeve 28 is formed with a cam-plate 58 which, when the sleeve is nearing its extreme left position, separates slightly, hinged sides of the box 30 to facilitate the discharge of the material from the box 30 to the box 29. The sides of the box 29 may be similarly formed and actuated. Forked levers 76 mounted on longitudinal shafts 74 and fitted with rods 72 and fingers 75 are actuated by rollers 73 on the sleeve 28, so that when the sleeve moves to the left, thereby opening the mould, the briquette may be positively dislodged if necessary, the briquettes falling down shoots 48 on to a removing conveyer 15.
