Abstract
323,334. Jones, R. A. Dec. 3, 1928. Cylinder machines; feeding blanks.-A machine of pressing soap &c. comprises means for successively feeding blanks transversely between a pair of dies, one being reciprocable toward and from the other which is movable laterally of the pressing movement to eject the pressed article on to conveyer means. As shown, cylindrical soap blanks are fed singly from a magazine 46, Figs. 1 and 2 by a pusher 74 attached to a carriage 75 reciprocated by a cam 68 on a shaft 66, lever 69 and link 77, the forward end of the blank being engaged by a resilient member 95 reciprocated in unison the pusher 74 by a second cam on the shaft 66 acting through levers 84, 87 coupled by a rod 88. The members 74, 95 are furnished with toothed heads and position the blank between upper and lower dies 154, 172. The upper die 154 is secured to the lower portion 121 of a slide 120 which is reciprocated by a toggle 116, 117, actuated through a lever 111 and rod 112 connected to a crank 114 on the main shaft 23. An adjustable spring connection 124 is provided in the link 117. The lower die 172 is secured to a shaft 173 rockable by a cam 181 levers 179, 183 rod 184 and lever 186 to bring the die alternately into alignment with the upper die 154, for pressing, and into the position shown in Fig. 2, for delivery of the pressed cake. A bent portion 187 of the lever 186 engages an abutment 188 to align the die vertically. The upper die comprises an outer shell 157, Fig. 9, housing a stripper 160 furnished with a shank 162 carrying a collar 163 which is engaged by a stripper finger 153, Figs. 1 and 2 rocked by a cam 136 on the shaft 68 through levers 137, 150 and link 148. An ejector 166, Fig. 9, pressed downwardly by a spring 168, detaches the pressed cake from the stripper 160. The lower die is furnished with an ejector 189, Fig. 11, retained by a flange 190 and furnished with a stem 192 carrying a roller 193 which engages a cam 196 to eject the soap cake as the shaft 173 is rocked. An endless belt, passing around a drum 210, Figs. 1 and 2 driven from the shaft 66 through chain gearing, receives and delivers the finished cakes. To prevent damage to the cakes, the belt is bounded by rails suitably padded at the receiving point. The main shaft 23 is driven by a clutch 26 controlled by a hand-lever 35 through a rod 34 and lever 32 and drives the shaft 66 through helical and spur gearing. In operation, the lowermost blank in the magazine is fed between the dies 154, 172 and a double pressure is imparted by the toggle 116, 117. The outer portion of the upper die telescopes over the lower die during compression. As the upper die rises, the finger 153 engages the collar 163 of the stripper 160 causing the cake to be stripped from the outer dies 157, after which the cake is detached by the ejector 166 and is left upon the bottom die from which it is delivered by the ejector 189.
