455,554. Refining sugar. HADDAN, R., 31, Bedford Street, Strand, London.- (Western States Machine Co. ; Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A.) March 22, 1935, No. 9047. [Class 127] Successive portions of a batch of massecuite are subjected, immediately before passing to the centrifuges, to stirring by a hollow stirrer through which hot water is passed. A mixing trough 1, Fig. 1, is divided into upper and lower compartments. Massecuite is delivered from the crystallizers 32, into the upper compartment and then flows, regulated by valves 23, into the lower compartment. In this compartment is a rotating hollow stirrer 7, through which is passed hot water from supply tank 12 at such a temperature and speed that the massecuite is quickly heated to render it fluid enough for effective separation by the centrifugals 5. A modified mixing trough as in Fig. 4 contains a small trough with a hot-water jacket and a heating stirrer, the massecuite overflowing gate 27 into the lower part which also contains a heating stirrer and which may have a hot water jacket. The stirrers shown in Fig. 4, have the heating tubes parallel to the axis, while in Fig. 1 they are circumferential.
