Abstract
In the production of bituminous coatings, e.g. on buildings or in road-making, particularly from bituminous substances of high melting point or of high filler content, the hot bituminous mass is placed under pressure by means of a continuous delivery pump or by means of an inert gas, and is sprayed through a homogenizing nozzle with the avoidance of any sudden changes of velocity acting upon the material. Clogging of the apparatus, separation of the filler, and the danger of spontaneous ignition of the bitumen are thereby avoided. Pipes through which the material passes should be without sudden alterations of cross-section, and byepasses or compensating spaces may be provided at bends, so that the material is carried to the nozzle with a constant and uniform movement. Steam, superheated if necessary, and nitrogen are mentioned as p suitable pressure media, and a compressed inert gas may also be supplied at the nozzle exit, to improve atomization. When a continuous acting pump is used, the container may be open, but the heated bituminous mass is preferably blanketed with an inert gas, such as nitrogen.
