Abstract

455,003. Rotary vacuum pumps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. May 5, 1936, No. 12695. Convention date, May 7, 1935. [Class 110 (ii)] [See also Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A submerged rotary vacuum pump 1, driven by an electric motor 2, has a suction pipe 4 open to the atmosphere while the pump is running up to working speed. After a time interval a valve 25 closes the pipe 4 to atmosphere, and simultaneously opens an inlet valve 14 to connect the pipe 4 with a pipe 12 which may lead to a mercury arc rectifier. Current for the motor 2 is supplied through lines 8 controlled by a manually operated switch 11 or control means 7. The valve 14 is secured to a bellows 19 and has a rubber disc 16 which seats on the open end of the pipe 4. A second, or relief valve, has a rubber seating 25 which co-operates with the open end 26 of the valve stem 18. The relief valve may move between stops 28, 29. A hole 32 in the valve stem leads to a hole 33 in the disc 14, and so to the pipe 4. To actuate the valve change-over, a solenoid plunger 35 is coupled by links 36, 37, with the valve stem 18. The solenoid is supplied with current by lines 38 through a switch means 39 which comprises a relay 40, the actuating coil 41 of which is supplied with current through contacts 42 of the switch 11 and through a thermostatic switch 43 having a heater element 44 to close contacts 45 in one of the solenoid leads 38 and simultaneously short-circuit the heater 44 through contacts 46.
