Abstract
454,490. Aircraft controls. SOC. D'- INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES & MECANIQUES S. I. A. M., 1, Route des Alpes, Fribourg, Switzerland. March 26, 1935, No. 9468. Convention date, April 11, 1934. [Classes 4 and 114] Rudders, elevators, balance flaps, and blades of variable-pitch propellers are adjusted by means subjected to the pressure of a gas the degree of such pressure being determined by the pilot or navigator and acting against the reaction of the medium of the control surface. Rudder 1 is coupled to pistons 7, 71 in cylinders 6, 6<1>, that are connected by pipe lines with reducing valves 9, 9<1> communicating with a storage cylinder 11. The reducing valves 9, 9<1>, may be set to a deter. mined pressure by the navigator through a lever system 10 whereby the rudder may be thrown over from straight ahead. The system includes springs 8, 8<1>, tending to keep the rudder amidships when no helm is required. In a modification, double pistons 12, 13 are employed connected by a rod which passes through a valved partition 14. When one way control only is required in the case of flaps 17 on aerofoils 19 a single cylinder 23 is employed, the spring 25 returning the flap to normal when pressure is taken off the piston 22. In this control similarly a double piston may be used in the single cylinder. When employed for altering the pitch of propeller blades 26 these are connected by links 29 with a slidable member 32 abutting through a ball-bearing 34 against a piston 35 which is under the influence of a liquid in chambers 36 and 37. The control is effected by altering a superimpressed gas pressure in the spaces 39 above the liquid.
