Abstract
131,356. Kennedy, C. J. H. Mackenzie-, and McLaughlin, G. C. May 13, 1918. Steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.- Mechanism for transmitting motion to the rudders &c. of air-craft &c. is provided with a piston in a cylinder full of oil or other liquid, which automatically prevents movement of the driven member until a passage is opened by the driving member to permit the liquid to pass from one side of the piston to the other. In the form shown, the piston 4 in the cylinder 1 is connected to hollow piston-rods 3, and provided with passages 5 adapted to be closed by spring-pressed annular valves 6. A longitudinally movable disk 9 in the piston is connected by rods 12 with movable blocks 13, to which are attached the actuating rods 14 for transmitting power. Wires 16, for controlling the rudder of an aeroplane &c., are attached to blocks 15 fixed in the ends of the piston-rods 3. Springs 10 normally hold the disk 9 in a central position between the valve-stems 7, and the valves 6 then prevent passage of the liquid through the passages 5 and thus prevent movement of the piston by either of the wires 16. When the rod 14 on the right is pulled to move the rudder &c., it first pulls the dish 9 against the stems 7 and opens the valve 6 as shown, to permit liquid to pass through the piston, and then draws the piston and rudder-wires 16 to the right. When the rod 14 is released, the valve 6 is automatically closed by the springs 8, and the piston is locked until again operated by pulling one of the rods 14. The ends of the piston rods 3 may be sealed by oil in annular passages 2a, connected, as shown, with a reservoir 18.
