[Class 140] An ornamental compound sheet material comprises a transparent or translucent sheet material backed with a pile fabric and in which the pile shows through in a pattern. The pattern may be derived from colour, from differences in lustre, e.g. due to the presence of yarns of different character or differences in the lay of the yarns as in a crushed pile fabric, or from differences in thickness of the pile as in a locally carbonized pile fabric. Haphazard pattern effects may also be obtained by pressing the sheet material on to the pile of the fabric in such a manner that the pile is deformed non-uniformly. The sheet materials may have a basis of regenerated cellulose or nitrocellulose or a non-cellulosic transparent substance. Organic derivatives of cellulose, e.g. cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate or nitro-acetate, and methyl, ethyl and butyl celluloses are specially valuable. The pile fabric may be made of regenerated cellulose artificial silk or natural silk, but preferably the pile is made of cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose. Pile fabrics having a back of cotton, linen or other natural or regenerated cellulose material may be employed when it is desired to stick the laminated product to a surface of wood &c. Sheet material may be fixed to one or both faces of a double-faced velvet. The laminated materials may be used for lamp shades, for the decoration of drums, for table tops and as wall decorations in bathrooms. In an example, a cellulose acetate sheet material is sprayed with a softening liquid and a crushed pile fabric having a cellulose acetate pile and a cotton backing is then pressed against the sprayed side of the sheet material.
