Abstract

454,189. Enamels and glazes; glass manufacture. DEUTSCHE TAFELGLAS AKT.-GES. (DETAG), 21, N³rnberger, F³rth, Germany. Nov. 1, 1935, No. 30243. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1934. [Class 56] A process for improving the resistance of glass, enamel, or glaze to chemical attack consists in incorporating water vapour'with the material while in the molten state, and preventing the escape of the water so incorporated during subsequent treatment. This is effected either by producing above the molten mass an atmosphere containing water vapour, or by introducing substances containing water into the molten mass or into the batch. Suitable substances for the latter purpose are moist sand, soda containing water, moist briquettes of glass, moist wood, or pieces of potato. The water vapour is prevented from escaping from the molten mass by maintaining above it an atmosphere containing water, for example, by introducing the vapour into a covered pot in which the batch is melted.
