Abstract

454,091. Self-combustible charges for generating gases under pressure. HOLM, J. M., 84, Haggs Road, Pollokshields, Glasgow, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Mulbank, London. Jan. 23, 1935, Nos. 2261 /35 and 351 /36. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] A substantially ashless charge or cartridge suitable for the actuation of pressure-operated mechanical devices comprises a first charge element capable of self-propagating combustion when ignited at substantially atmospheric pressure or at the pressure generated by an igniting element, and, adapted for direct ignition by said first charge element a second charge element capable of selfpropagating combustion only when ignited at a pressure considerably in excess of atmospheric pressure. More than two graded charge elements may be used to ignite in succession. Suitable compositions for making these charges are made from non-explosive carbon-containing materials with sufficient ammonium nitrate to prevent formation of carbon ; the amount of ammonium nitrate will usually be at least four times the amount of the carbon-containing material. The compositions can be graded by the addition thereto of varying amounts of nitrocellulose, which may extend from 7 to 20 per cent or more of the total weight of the charge. The compositions described in Specification 453,210 may be used for the charges of the present invention.
