Abstract

453,284. Helmets. BELL'S ASBESTOS & ENGINEERING SUPPLIES, Ltd., and BEDWELL, T. G., Bestobell Works, Slough, Buckinghamshire. March 27, 1935, Nos. 9552 and 32744. [Class 63] A heat-resisting helmet adapted for use with other protective clothing by firemen, comprises a crown portion of rigid construction and an apron or shield depending therefrom to surround the neck of the wearer, a part of the apron in front of the wearer's eyes being provided with a fire-resisting window or windows to-form a visor portion, the whole of the exposed parts being composed of fire-resisting material. The crown 1 may be of cork, papier mÔchÚ, fibre or textile material impregnated with a phenol formaldehyde. It is covered with a layer 4 of woven asbestos and is provided with a peak having a similar covering. An apron 5 of asbestos cloth depends from the crown and peak and is adapted to be tucked into other fireproof clothing of the wearer. It may have sliding clasp fastenings or lacings closing slits or pleats. The helmet may have a chin strap. The peak has a ventilation opening 2 provided with a cover 2a retained by a spring 2c in either open or closed position. Baffles 3 of metallic gauze and 3a of solid material may be provided for preventing the entry of flame. In front of the wearer's eyes the apron has double windows of mica, separated by an air space 6. In a modification, intended for use in higher temperatures, the outer covering is double throughout, the helmet having a double crown with an air space between the two, the windows carried by a double visor portion of asbestos millboard treated with silicate of soda blocked to shape and baked, and the apron having carded asbestos fibre or felt between two or more layers and retained by quilting stitches. The ventilator in the peak may have a rotating or sliding lid, or a flap of woven asbestos, or may comprise a hit-and-miss grating. The ventilator may be gas-tight when closed.
