[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 4, 1935.] [Class 44] [See also Groups XV and XVIII] In a fountain-pen, propelling pencil, or other writing-instrument adapted for use as a scale beam or balance, the usual garment clip 4, 8, Figs. 1 and 6, is constructed as an adjustable holding-ring with a bearing for the fulcrum of the balance and a rod articulated to it for use as a hand-grip. The handgrip may comprise an arm 6, Fig. 1, pivoted to an eye 5 on the garment clip and provided with a ball 7 which is adapted to be housed and spring-gripped in the out-of-use position in a hollow ball 9 on the clip arm 8. The ring portion 4 of the clip is provided with depressions on either side of the scale 3 to prevent rotation of the pen in the ring. Alternatively the clip arm 8 forms the hand-grip and is provided with a loop 8a, Fig. 6, and detent 8 f. A pivotpin 4e is carried by struck up lugs 4d on the holding-ring 4, and may lie in the loop 8a and act as a fulcrum, or. in the detent 8f, in which case a portion 8c of the loop engages the barrel of the pen and the arm 8 is pressed into position to act as a garment clip.
