Abstract

452,652. Sluice gates. HILLMAN, E. C., c/o River Trent Catchment Board, Vernon House, Friar Lane, Nottingham. Jan. 26, 1935, No. 2629. [Class 68 (ii)] [See also Group XXIX] A flap valve or gate suspended from an axis above the mouth of a drainage culvert, outfall or the like adapted to be submerged, for instance by the rise of the tides, is made of metal but has a specific gravity only slightly in excess-say 1.2 in the case of a drainage culvert-of that of the liquid in which it is intended to operate. The gate is thus opened easily by the liquid pressure in the culvert when the head outside falls. The hollow iron or steel valve 11, which is of sectoral cross - section, seats on a gun-metal facedframe 13 mounted at the end of a culvert 10, the mouth of which may be inclined to the vertical as shown. The valve is connected by short links 14 to pivots 12 on the frame 13. Ballast may be provided by cast-iron weights 17 spot welded to the arcuate base 15 of the valve. Water ballast may also be provided, and to ensure an even distribution from top to bottom of the valve vertical partitions are provided so that one or more of the compartments so formed may be filled with water. Silt collecting on the face 11a of the valve is washed away by the flow through one or more passages 19 controlled by a flap valve or series of flap valves 20 extending across the main valve. These valves 20 deflect the water down the face 11a. A cock may be provided for removing the water ballast by syphoning or other means so that the valve is rendered more buoyant and may be towed into position or removed for repair by the aid of lugs 18. Preferably, the centre of gravity of the valve is arranged to coincide with or be somewhat above its centre of buoyancy.
