Abstract

452,305. Golf clubs. FAIRWEATHER, W. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.-(Glover, E. ; 253, Tenafly Road, Tenafly, New Jersey, U.S.A.) March 9, 1935, No. 7442. [Class 132 (ii)] Means for locking the adjustable head of a golf club in selected position comprises a rotatable detent, sleeving the shaft and formed at its lower end with an annular flange movable by rotation of the detent into locking engagement with a toothed portion of the head. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, a spigot 7 extends from the heel of the head 1 into a bearing 3 formed at the lower extremity of the shaft, disengagement being prevented by a headed pin 8 secured by a rivet 10. The head is thus adjustable about a horizontal axis to vary the angle of loft, and is locked in selected position by a nut 14 threaded on the shaft and engaging by its lower flanged end with teeth 12 on a sector-shaped extension 11 of the head. The heavy heel of the club is balanced by a projection 5 near the toe, the arrangement being such that the centre of gravity of the head is substantially equidistant from its ends but below the longitudinal median plane. In a modification, Fig. 8, the head is connected to a bearing 19 by a screw 21 secured to the head. The bearing is carried by a plug 27 threaded into a sleeve 17 forming the lower end of the shaft, rotation of the sleeve relatively to the plug serving to lock the head in adjusted-position by engagement of the flanged lower end of the sleeve with teeth 12 on a sector 11 threaded for engagement by the screw 21.
