451,850. Magnetic measurements. CARETTA, E., 19, Corso Raffaello, Turin, Italy. Jan. 8, 1935, No. 695. [Class 37] The existence or direction of a magnetic field is indicated by its inductive effect on one or more coils wound on a magnetic core which has its reluctance varied by a periodically variable current supplied to auxiliary coils on a core part, the current in the auxiliary coils not affecting the induced current traversing the indicating instrument. Coils 2, 2a on an open magnetic circuit formed by the bars 1, la receive induced currents from the external field 6, while the coils 3, 3a on a closed magnetic circuit 8, 8a, 9, 9a forming part of the open circuit 1, la are energized from a source connected at 4, 4a. A central zero instrument can be employed, rectification of the currents in coils 2, 2a being effected by a synchronous vibrator energized by the source connected at 4, 4a, or static contact rectifiers may be used, or electrical means may be provided for neutralizing the swing of the instrument needle. Fig. 5 shows a compass with such a rectifier at 13, the induced currents being fed to a cross-coil instrument 20 to the field magnet 24 of which the compass rose 25 is secured. Orientation of the rose with respect to the field 6 is effected by pinion 27. Two closed magnetic circuits 17 may be employed.
