June 21, 1935, No. 17930. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XL] Variable - grid bias voltage for a D.C. amplifier is derived from a source of potential A, by means of a Wheatstone bridge circuit B, C, which is set slightly out of balance, the bias voltage GB being taken by a slider D<1> on a resistance D in a diagonal of the bridge and through which flows the out-of-balance current. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the two sliders B1, C1, on the resistances B, C are gangcontrolled from the knob HBC in such manner that for all positions of the knob the bridge is slightly unbalanced ; alternatively the necessary unbalance may be obtained by an additional resistance between adjacent ends of resistances BC. A predetermined small amount of backlash may be introduced into the mechanical connection of sliders B1, C1. The arrangement is particularly applicable to direct current amplifiers in electro-cardiographs.
