Abstract

451,465. Milk -bottle caps. GAMMETER, J. R., 680, North Portage Path, Akron, Ohio, U.S.A. Aug. 17, 1935, No. 23198. Convention date, April 2. [Class 125 (iii)] A milk-bottle cap of yieldable material comprises a substantially flat top portion 11 and a skirt portion 12 normally extending in substantial parallelism with said top portion. The cap may be of rubber or other similar yieldable material such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Pliofilm " or only the top portion may be of "Pliofilm." The skirt portion 12 is provided with an opening 13. When not in use the caps may be stacked. In use the skirt portion 12 is stretched over the bead on the neck of a bottle, and the top 11 is substantially free from tension. A convenient method of making the caps is to use a sheet of unvulcanized calendered sheet rubber material 0.015" to 0À02" thick, which is placed between dies, 19, 10. The hole 13 is then punched in the sheet. A circular die 23 having a recess 24 in which is held by suction a sheet 25 of unvulcanized rubber 0À01" thick is then moved into engagement with the sheet 18 to cut the cap out of the two sheets, the pressure between the dies sealing the edges of the two sheets together, the upper die 23 being suitably shaped as at 27. The caps are then vulcanized. Preferably they are first dusted with soapstone or similar material to prevent their sticking together and are then placed in a tubular container which may also be used for slipping the cap one on top of the other with the skirt portions facing in the same direction. The container is then slowly rotated on its axis in warm air, (e.g. 150‹ F.) to vulcanize the rubber. The sheets of rubber contain suitable accelerators to aid the vulcanization which may take 8 hours. If " Pliofilm " is used for the cap, heat is needed to cause the component parts to stick together, and if rubber and " Pliofilm " are both used, the rubber must be vulcanized at a low temperature, e.g. 120‹ F. for approximately 48 hours. " Pliofilm " caps need to be heated to about 100‹ F. for efficient application to the bottles. The caps may be of any suitable colours. Preferably the top portion of the cap is transparent to permit printing or an ordinary paper disc below the cap to be read with ease.
