[Class 79 (v)] Relates to steering-gear of the kind comprising a master or pump unit having a piston actuated by the steering hand wheel through screw gearing, and connected by pipes to a secondary or motor unit secured to the front axle and operating the stub-axle arms of the steerable wheels. According to the present invention, the piston a<1>, Fig. 3, of the master unit is mounted on a rod f extending through glands in each end of the cylinder a, the screw gearing couples the steering hand wheel b to the rod, and the rod is prevented from rotation. In the construction shown, the rod f is prevented from rotation by a bar o<1> secured to the rod by a nut o<3> and sliding in a slot ml in a head m secured by bolts n to the cylinder a. The bar o<1> is connected by bolts o<4> to another bar o secured to the rod f by a nut o<2>. The head m carries a plate n<1> forming a radial and thrust bearing for the steering hand wheel b, a nut r screwed on the rod f being fixed to the wheel b, so that rotation of the hand wheel causes axial movement of the rod and piston. Ports l, l<1> in the cylinder a are connected by copper pipes s and flexible pipes s<1> to a motor cylinder c, the piston rod f of which is connected by adjustable links h to the stub-axle steering arms i. The rod f is in two parts screwed together at f<2> so as to clamp the piston f<1> between them. Glands g<1> and lead packing g<2> are provided at each end of the cylinder. The pump and motor units are similar in size and in construction, except that the pump cylinder a has different pipe connections l, l<1>. Filling plugs k, j<3> are provided in the two units. The gear ratio of the steering gear may be changed by changing the nut r and the screwed part of the rod f for other screw parts having a different pitch.
