[Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen having means for sealing the ink reservoir and having a pistonrod consisting of parts screwed into each other, the thicker end of the piston-rod is mounted so as to be rotatable and longitudinally movable in a guide - sleeve located in the upper end of the barrel, and is provided with an annular packing-surface which co-operates with a corresponding seat arranged in the guide-sleeve to seal the ink reservoir to the outside 1 and means is provided to retain the piston-rod part in the sealing position. The piston a is carried by a rod h provided with an enlarged head h<1> screwing into a telescopic tube g, which in turn has a head g<1> screwing into a tube g<2>. The tube g<2> passes freely through a guidesleeve d and is rotated to advance or retract the piston, by a head f, while the piston is being retracted the frictional drag presses the head f on to the outer end of the sleeve d, but air can escape from behind the piston through a recess in the edge of the head f. When the piston is completely retracted a protective cap e is screwed on to the head f and withdraws it sufficiently to press a packing-ring c against the inner end of the sleeve d, and thus completely seal the barrel. The piston-rod may be in four or more telescoping parts.
